Clinical Trials Supplies
A clinical trial is an
intervention study – a particular kind of clinical research study that aims to answer the
question about treatment. The treatment under investigation can be a new drug, medical
device, or behavior. The question is usually about the safety or efficacy of the
A long process of preclinical
research precedes a clinical trial. Initially, the intervention is studied in the lab. These
tests begin in labs and often involve toxicity screening. Then they will progress to
animals( as mice or ferrets) for further toxicity and safety testing and to collect initial
efficacy outcomes. After preclinical research, if the intervention appears promising, it
will enter into the 5 phases of the clinical trial:
There are four phases in a clinical trial:
- Phase I studies: Usually test new drugs for the first time in a
small group of people to
evaluate a safe dosage range and identify side effects.
- Phase II studies: Test treatments that are safe in phase I but now
need a larger group
of human subjects to monitor for any adverse effects.
- Phase III studies: This phase is conducted on larger populations
in different regions
and countries and is often the step right before a new treatment is approved.
- Phase IV studies: Take place after country approval, and there is
a need for further
testing in a wide population over a longer timeframe.
